Driving Diversity in Health Research: Celebrating 5 Years of the All of Us Journey Mobile Tour

Remember this? We can hardly believe it has been a whole five years since we formally launched the All of Us Journey, the traveling educational exhibit that brings the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program to communities across the U.S.

It’s been a wild ride—adding onboard enrollment and biosample collection, shifting to virtual events during the pandemic, relaunching with dozens of measures in place to keep our guests safe, and expanding from one RV to a fleet of vehicles operating three, eight-month long regional tours. We’re so proud of how far we’ve come and the impact we’ve been able to make in reaching, educating, and enrolling diverse communities in the All of Us Research Program. As of May 2023, we’ve hosted more than 1,000 event days, held nearly 80,000 quality conversations, and helped more than 11,000 people register with All of Us.

To celebrate five years, we asked our team and our longstanding partners to reflect on the Journey’s…well, journey. From their earliest memories to their favorite moments, what they are most proud of to how we’re making a difference, their reflections help tell the story of the All of Us Journey’s success. Hear what they have to say.

What is the All of Us Journey?

The All of Us Journey is an interactive educational exhibit that travels the country to drive awareness and enrollment in the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program. Onboard the Journey, visitors experience hands-on activities and interactive displays that demonstrate the power of their participation in health research. From interactive video to virtual reality, yard games to high-impact visual displays, each of the activities is designed to make complex concepts like precision medicine and health equity accessible and engaging.

People can also enroll in the All of Us Research Program during their visit. All of Us Journey Tour Managers and Ambassadors are always on hand to answer questions and help attendees become program participants.

What makes the Journey unique?

The All of Us Journey isn’t your typical mobile tour. Rather than stopping and hosting visitors in the nation’s largest cities or at popular mass market events, the Journey prioritizes reaching communities that have been historically underrepresented in medical research. For example, the All of Us Journey’s route in the West Region began in Calexico, CA, a city of roughly 40,000 people of which 96% identify as Hispanic or Latino.

Many groups, like the Hispanic/Latino community, have been left out of health research in the past. The All of Us Research Program is changing that by building one of the largest and most diverse health databases of its kind. Reaching underrepresented communities sometimes means going the extra mile and the All of Us Journey does that. We meet people where they are and collaborate with local partners to create authentic experiences and overcome barriers to participation.

How does Montage support the Journey?

Montage has overseen the All of Us Journey since its inception. We develop the onboard engagements and handle all routing, scheduling, and staffing. Beyond the logistical aspects, our team conducts outreach and builds relationships with influential organizations in each community we visit. In some cases, these organizations host the All of Us Journey during our visit to a particular community. In others, they may table at the Journey events or help with advanced promotion. Thanks to our partners we are able to achieve greater reach and better facilitate education and enrollment in the All of Us Research Program.

Where can I experience the All of Us Journey?

In 2023, the Journey expanded to reach more communities. We now have three mobile exhibits in different regions—East, Central, and West. You can find the remaining stops for 2023 on the schedules below and stay up to date on all upcoming events at joinallofus.org/journey-and-events.

How can I learn more about the All of Us Research Program?

In the past, medical research has left many people behind. The All of Us Research Program wants to change that by including everyone. Only when all communities are part of medical research can all of us benefit from future medical advances.

Montage is proud to support the All of Us Research Program through the Journey and in other ways. If you’re interested in learning more and/or signing up as a program participant, you can do so at JoinAllofUs.org/tour.
